World War 2 Air Raid Warden's Form

» Show All     «Prev «1 ... 35 36 37 38 39

William Edward Turner 1902-1981 was graded as unfit for service in the armed forces but instead he was a firewatcher at his London shop premises and as air raid warden at home in Beckenham.

As an air raid warden he patrolled his allocated patch, knocking up householders if their blackout was faulty, helping to dig out those buried in the debris and extinguishing the smaller fires. One main job was to observe and report back to headquarters using the air raid warden's forms.

His local air raid warden's post was three doors away from 113 Stanhope Grove in a re-inforced concrete hut just inside the gates of the Eden Park Recreation Ground. Like all Air Raid Warden's Posts it had a Gas Attack detector just outside.
