    • When Alicia died in 1388 there was an inquiry called an inquisition post mortem. . The purpose was to establish what lands were held and who should succeed to them. If there was no one to inherit the land, it was reclaimed by the crown. In this case, Richard's son John inherited. The feudal system required the lands be held by one person and not be dispersed among many. This made it easier to enforce the obligations that came with the lands. The rule adopted was that of primogeniture, the eldest son inherited.
