253 The Woodruff name is quite common in the Burnley area and appears regularly in the early records of St Peter's Church.

John Woodruffs home was the Bank Hall estate on the north east side of the town,on the north bank of the River Brun. Bank Hall was one of the original freehold estates in Burnley. The original farmstead at Bank Hall was a half timbered building and during the sixteenth century it had a priest's hole for Roman Catholic priests.

John Woodruff was one of the first to mine coal in the area,on Burnley Ridge. In 1515 he was ordered to "close" his unlawful pit.

The Woodruffs were constantly quarrelling with the neighbouring Folds family about their common boundary of the River Brun.In 1518 Folds was ordered to maintain his fences, for which he was allowed to take stones from the middle of the river. He was also ordered to cut down any wood growing either in the water or along the bank

John Woodruff was an active supporter of the RC Chantries and even after the Reformation he remained loyal to the Roman Catholic faith.
